Thomas Coon, M.D.

Thomas Coon, MD, is a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon who pioneered minimally invasive knee replacement surgery in the United States. Using highly specialized instruments - which he helped develop - and state of the art technology, Dr. Coon performs a breakthrough alternative to traditional total knee replacement: minimally invasive quad-sparing total knee arthroplasty. He has performed more than 7,000 total and partial replacement surgeries during his career and trains physicians worldwide in his techniques.

A native of Ohio, Dr. Coon spent more than 15 years practicing orthopedic surgery in the small town of Bryan, Ohio, where he began developing breakthrough techniques in small incision hip and knee surgery. He studied at The Medical College of Ohio at Toledo before completing his MD at Ohio State University College of Medicine.

He is a husband, dad and an avid race car driver.


Adam Freedhand, M.D.

Adam Freedhand, MD, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in joint replacement of the hip, knee and shoulder and is a founding member of the Coon Joint Replacement Institute at St. Helena Hospital.

Dr. Freedhand’s practice focuses on minimally invasive joint replacement surgery using the latest state of the art technologies including computer-assisted navigation and robotic- assisted partial knee replacement. He was the first surgeon to introduce hip resurfacing and anterior-approach total hip replacement to the Napa Valley and continues to advance these techniques to optimize patient outcomes. An expert in hip and knee replacement surgery, Dr. Freehand uses minimally invasive surgical techniques to reduce pain, restore mobility and promote a quick return to normal activities for patients suffering from osteoarthritis and other conditions.

A native of New York, Dr. Freedhand completed his undergraduate degree at Yale University before finishing at the top of his class in medical school at the State University of New York in Brooklyn. He completed his internship and orthopedic residency at the Hospital for the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Freedhand’s fellowship training was at the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Adult Reconstruction and Sports Medicine in New York City. He is a devoted father and avid athlete who enjoys board sports, bicycling, golf and yoga.
